IN GENEVA

Minister Albares addresses the United Nations Human Rights Council

The head of Spanish diplomacy recalls the "unacceptable violations of human rights" that are taking place in Ukraine and Gaza and reiterates both "Spain's unwavering support for Ukraine's territorial integrity" and its financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

February 26, 2024
In his speech at the so-called High Level Segments of the Conference on Disarmament and the Human Rights Council, José Manuel Albares stated that "globally, we are living in complex times with multiple crises and frozen conflicts". At the same time, Minister Albares pointed out that "multilateralism is the way to ensure peaceful coexistence, building trust and building bridges. In this spirit, he added, we have presented Spain's candidacy to become a member of the Human Rights Council for the three-year period 2025-2027".

During his stay in Geneva, José Manuel Albares met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, and with his Palestinian counterpart, Riad al Maliki. In addition, he participated as co-organiser of an event on feminist foreign policy in which he called for "further progress in parity in multilateral organisations and for the next Secretary General of the United Nations to be a woman".
