February 23, 2024
In his address to the General Assembly, Minister Albares repeated Spain's condemnation of the Russian aggression against Ukraine and highlighted our country's increased financial support for the International Criminal Court, stating that “there can be no impunity for the criminal acts that Russia has carried out against civilians”.

The head of Spanish diplomacy then called on all General Assembly members to join President Zelensky's Peace Formula, an initiative that will serve “to end to a situation that requires commitment from everyone”.

Lastly, José Manuel Albares gave an assurance that “we will continue to stand by Ukraine until we meet again, in this Assembly, not to remember the first day of a cruel war but to celebrate its last day and the beginning of a just peace in a free Ukraine”.

During his stay at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Minister Albares held bilateral meetings with, among others, Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General; Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General for the Office of Counter-Terrorism; Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs; and Rosemary Di Carlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs.
