Wednesday, May 21, 2025

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, met today in Madrid with his counterpart from the Dominican Republic, Roberto Álvarez, with whom he reviewed the excellent bilateral relations that unite the two countries, as well as relations with the European Union and the main regional issues in Latin America.

Spain and the Dominican Republic — a reliable partner and historic friend — maintain satisfactory and intense bilateral relations that cover all areas. This was evident in the celebration of the Second High-Level Political Dialogue between the two countries, which took place in Santo Domingo in November 2024.

Intense collaboration

During the meeting, Albares highlighted the good collaboration between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs, which are working together on the reform of the Dominican foreign service and the consular service.

The minister especially highlighted the importance of Spanish cooperation, which has been present in the Dominican Republic for 35 years, and which has more than 125 million euros committed and/or in execution of Official Development Assistance, prioritising institutional strengthening, gender and the reduction of inequalities. Precisely, last week, the 2025-2028 Country Partnership Framework was signed.

On the economic level, Spain, with a large investment presence in the country, intends to continue strengthening its commercial and investment ties in the Dominican Republic.

International agenda

Relations with the European Union and regional issues also occupied a large part of the meeting. Specifically, Albares highlighted the importance of the upcoming international events to take place in Spain: the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, to be held in Seville at the end of June, and the Ibero-American Summit in Madrid, in 2026.

Minister Albares also expressed Spain's commitment to Haiti to prevent the crisis from affecting the stability of the Dominican Republic and the entire region. Our country, as Albares recalled to his counterpart, supports the deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission for Haiti, with a total contribution of 4 million euros, and defends that it can be converted into a United Nations Peacekeeping Operation, as the only means to restore security and stabilise the country.
