Ukraine and the relationship of the European Union with the United States are the two main issues at the centre of the informal meeting of foreign ministers organised by the Polish Presidency in Warsaw on 7 and 8 May, and in which the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, on behalf of Spain, participates.
In the case of Ukraine, Albares will once again state that the priority is to make Ukraine stronger and, to achieve that objective, Spain will continue to implement the bilateral security agreement and provide military equipment with which Ukraine can defend itself against Russian aggression.
These approaches are in line with the intention of European ministers to contribute to the defense of Ukraine and to reinforce its negotiating position to achieve a just and lasting peace. In this regard, the EU pays special attention to financial and military support for Ukraine, to pressure on Russia, to the process of Ukraine's accession to the EU and to the reinforcement of European defense capabilities.
On the EU's relationship with the US, Albares's message will be aimed at pursuing a balanced and mutually beneficial relationship, after recalling that the two regions have historically been natural allies who have sufficient tools to advance that relationship.
The meeting is also attended by the British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, with whom the EU-27 foreign ministers will hold a working session in which issues of common interest will be addressed, such as Ukraine, European security, the Middle East, Sudan and the security and defense of Europe.
