On Monday 24 November, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, chaired the meeting of Ibero-American Foreign ministers that gave the green light to the strategic objectives for Ibero-American cooperation and mandated the relevant bodies to draw up an operational plan for their implementation.
At the meeting, held online, the ministers also approved a Common Ibero-American Position calling for the next person to assume the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations to come from Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Foreign ministers also made progress on a proposal for structured and ongoing dialogue with the Caribbean region, with an agenda focused on shared interests and aimed at achieving tangible results from cooperation between the two regions.
The meeting, held under Spain's Pro Tempore Secretariat, also approved various administrative documents necessary for the functioning of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) and presented the report on Associate and Consultative Observers, which will serve as the basis for establishing a calendar of meetings with specific proposals on political and cooperation matters ahead of the Ibero-American Summit in Madrid.
With this new impetus to the operating mechanisms of the Ibero-American Community of Nations, progress is being made on the calendar of ministerial meetings, forums and preparatory meetings for the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, to be held in Madrid on 4 and 5 November 2026.
