PRESS STATEMENT 101

Spanish Government welcomes release of Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas

Yesterday
The Spanish Government welcomes the release of the hostages, after two years of being kidnapped and held in intolerable conditions by the terrorist group Hamas. The Government wishes a speedy recovery to those returning to their families, and extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have died.

The release of the hostages, which Spain has been demanding constantly since their abduction more than two years ago, marks the fulfilment of the first phase of the agreement reached between the parties, together with the start of the ceasefire and the massive influx of humanitarian aid into the Strip, which will help alleviate the catastrophic situation facing the Palestinian population in Gaza.

The Government reiterates its gratitude to the mediators, the United States, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey, for their efforts, which have made this release possible.

Spain will continue to redouble its efforts and contribute to advancing the next phases of the peace agreement, with a view to ensuring that this first hopeful step paves the way for lasting peace, security and stability in the region, based on the effective implementation of the two-State solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.
