To mark the Budapest Pride march, Spain underscores its commitment to equality and fundamental rights

Friday, June 27, 2025

To mark the Pride March in Budapest on 28 June, Spain has underscored its unwavering commitment to equality, diversity, the rights of LGTBIQ+ people and the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and freedom of association.

All across the world, Pride Day marches are a reminder of the fight against discrimination, criminalisation and violence against LGTBIQ+ people and a tool to demand fairer and more equal societies where there is no backtracking in the rights of LGTBIQ+ people.

The EU is built with human rights at its core, as enshrined in the Treaty on European Union and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. These rights include the rights to freedom of expression, assembly and association, which are violated by the refusal to allow a demonstration to raise awareness of discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation, as the European Court of Human Rights has already ruled on numerous occasions. European law and jurisprudence also protect LGTBIQ+ persons by expressly prohibiting any discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and allowing for the adoption of anti-discrimination measures.

Spain is fully committed to the rights of LGTBIQ+ people and to the defence of human rights. We shall continue to work for the European values of freedom and tolerance. To build free societies in which all people can enjoy a full life, free from harassment and discrimination based on sexual orientation or identity, gender expression or sexual characteristics.
