Spain expresses its concern over new legislation passed by the Iraqi Parliament that criminalises homosexual relations and transgender expression

The decision is contrary to Iraq's international human rights obligations.

The fight against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is a priority of Spanish foreign policy on human rights. The promotion of diversity, in all its forms, contributes to more open, inclusive, equitable and tolerant societies. For this reason, Spain will continue to work with all the instruments at its disposal for the decriminalisation of LGTBI expressions throughout the world.
