Spain Contributes to OPCW’s CHEMEX-LATAM Project

Spain has made a voluntary contribution of €75,000 to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to support the CHEMEX-LATAM project, an initiative designed to strengthen cooperation and enhance regional preparedness in the face of chemical threats and accidents. The agreement was signed today at the OPCW Headquarters in The Hague.

Following the success of the CHEMEX-AFRICA programme, held in Algeria in 2023, the OPCW has launched the CHEMEX-LATAM project with the objective of reinforcing collaboration between the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and the OPCW. The initiative will provide specialized training, improve response capabilities, and strengthen healthcare preparedness against chemical threats.

The programme will be implemented in coordination with the governments of participating countries and the OPCW Secretariat. It will include a series of courses and seminars designed to assess and develop the skills of regional specialists in high-risk scenarios, focusing on rescue operations, detection, sampling, and decontamination procedures.

With this contribution, Spain reaffirms its firm commitment to international cooperation and to strengthening regional and global capacities in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation. Spain will continue to work actively with the international community on the advancement on disarmament in other regions.
