This Consulate is competent to accept visa applications from individuals residing in the Consular District: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
This visa is intended for teachers, journalists, researchers, scientists and religious ministers that will travel to Spain to carry out activities that are not meant for long-term continuation.
The visa process might take up to 2 months after the reception of your visa file.
Place of submission: Applications and requirements must be submitted via postal mail to the Consulate
General of Spain in Houston- Visa Department (1800 Bering Dr. Suite 750 Houston, Texas, 77057).
Documents Required:
ORIGINAL and ONE PHOTOCOPY of each of the following items:
- National visa application form: It must be signed and filled out correctly.
- Passport: Valid for a minimum of 1 year, with at least two consecutive blank pages to affix the visa. Your passport will remain at the Consulate.
- Proof of residency in the Consular Jurisdiction: notarized copy of US Driver´s license or US State ID.
- Non-US Citizens: Proof of legal residence in the United States: notarized copy of resident alien card, valid US visa.
- Two recent passport-sized photos: White Background, 2x2in, glued to the applications.
- Original Official Invitation Letter describing the activities to be performed, mentioning also that the organization will assume financial responsibility for the applicant. Documents verifying that the organization is accredited by the corresponding governmental authorities in Spain.
- Documentation proving that the visa applicant has sufficient financial means to cover his/her living and maintenance expenses, including, where applicable, those of his/her family, during the period of time he/she remains in Spain.
- Diplomas, credentials and other documents that proof you are qualified for the position offered, plus certified translation into Spanish.
- Authorization form M790 C052- ¨Autorización de residencia¨. Only available in Spanish.
- Form EX-09- Signed and filled out in print. Only available in Spanish.
- Visa Fee: Only money orders are accepted, payable to the Consulate of Spain in Houston.
US Passport holders fee $140 (plus $13 residence permit) TOTAL $153.00
Other nationalities fee $104 (plus $13 residence permit) TOTAL $117.00

- USPS Priority or Express Mail: prepaid, self-addressed and with a tracking number.
- Postal delivery authorization: duly filled out and signed.
- Proof of international medical insurance: (travel insurance will not be accepted) Letter by a health insurance company authorized to operate in Spain, providing medical coverage for the entire period of your stay in Spain according to the official invitation letter. It must include the following coverage: emergency medical cover, sickness and accident, hospital in-outpatient, general practitioners & specialists, prescript medicine and repatriation.
- Bilingual Medical Certificate: A doctor's recent statement (not older than 3 months with doctors or medical centers letterhead). It must be signed by an MD or DO, with doctor´s ink signature and indicate the following: 'the interested does not suffer from any of the diseases that may have serious public health repercussions in accordance with the provisions of the 2005 International Health Regulations´. ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS FOR STAYS OVER 180 DAYS
- Criminal record certificate: issued by the US Department of Justice – Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) not older than 6 months. It must be legalized with the Apostille of The Hague from US Department of State, Washington DC. Both documents must be translated by a certified translator (Not for minors under 18 years old).
If you have also resided in a foreign country more than 6 months during the past 5 years, you must get background check from that country legalized with the Apostille of The Hague. Both documents must be translated into Spanish by a certified translator.
