Secretary of State for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and for Spanish around the World

​Juan Fernández Trigo was appointed to the position of Secretary of State for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and for Spanish around the World at the Council of Ministers meeting held on 20 July 2021.

Born in 1958 in Terrassa (Barcelona province), Mr. Fernández Trigo holds a Degree in Law, and became a career diplomat in 1986. He has been posted to Spain’s Diplomatic Missions to the European Union, Morocco, Vietnam, the United Nations in New York, and Cuba. He also served as Deputy Director-General for Multilateral International Economic Relations, and for Air, Sea and Land Cooperation. From 2007 to 2011, Mr. Fernández Trigo was Spain’s Ambassador to Haiti, and between 2011 and 2013, Spain’s Ambassador to Paraguay. Between 2013 and 2017, he held the position of Ambassador-Head of Delegation of the European Union in Uruguay. From 2017 to 2018, he was posted to the Office of the Under-Secretariat for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and was the coordinator for the implementation of article 155 of the Spanish Constitution at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Between 2018 and 2020, Mr. Fernández Trigo was Spain’s Ambassador to Cuba, and in 2020 he was appointed Chargé d’Affaires of Spain in Venezuela.​​
