Through the #ViajaSeguro safe travel campaign, the Spanish public are reminded of preventive measures that can make a real difference before and during foreign travel. It is recommended, for example, to find out about local laws and regulations, check documentation and take out travel insurance.

Key recommendations

  • Check the specific travel recommendations for each country on the Ministry website before you leave.
  • Check that your passport, ID card and other documentation have not expired and will not expire while you are abroad[PCSA1] .
  • Enter your details on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Travel Register to make it easier to locate you and provide you with consular assistance in the event of an emergency.
  • Take out travel insurance to cover possible incidents, including healthcare coverage.
  • If you are going to drive abroad, make sure that you have a driving licence and insurance that are valid in your destination country.
  • Pack any medication you may need, along with the corresponding medical certificate, when applicable.

Raising awareness in different areas

The Ministry is also raising awareness of some factors that can be very different from one country to the next. For example, possession of drugs, even in small amounts, can be subject to prison sentences in some countries. In addition:

  • For people travelling as a couple, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses that the rights and legal recognition of relationships between people of the same sex are not the same in all countries, so it is advisable to obtain information on the current laws of your destination before travelling.
  • Students who plan to spend time abroad should also plan their travel arrangements in good time. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs therefore recommends taking out appropriate medical insurance and entering your details on the Travel Register.

The #ViajaSeguro campaign is focused on prevention as the best way of avoiding problems during international travel. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs therefore emphasizes that being informed about destinations, preparing documentation correctly and following official recommendations are all crucial for the safest possible travel.
