The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation today hosted the HearUs Conference Catalysing a political space and accountability for Afghan women at its headquarters in Marqués de Salamanca. The aim of these initiatives is to ensure that Member States of the United Nations implement a clear and coherent approach to protecting and guaranteeing the rights of Afghan women and girls.
This meeting was a follow-up to the priorities adopted in the Tirana Declaration during the All Afghan Women Summit held last September. The President of the Women for Afghanistan Association, Fawzia Koofi, explained at the event that the adoption of these priorities means bringing hope to Afghan women that there is an awakening in the international community to fight against the erosion of human rights in Afghanistan.
The event, inaugurated by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares Bueno, was widely attended by authorities and representatives of civil society. Co-organised by Women for Afghanistan, it brought together more than 50 Afghan women in exile, special envoys for Afghanistan and female Ambassadors on Special Mission for Gender Equality and Feminist Foreign Policy from numerous countries, as well as representatives of the United Nations and other international organisations.
