Guide to the Diplomatic Service Exams

​The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation has announced the selection process for entry into the Diplomatic Service, which will allow around thirty new diplomats to join the Foreign Service, as published today in the Official State Gazette (BOE). What is the Diplomatic Service?

The diplomatic service is made up of professionals who represent Spain abroad, whether in embassies, consulates, or international organisations. Their duties include negotiating treaties, promoting economic and cultural interests, and protecting the rights of Spanish citizens overseas.

​To join this branch of the General Administration of the State, candidates must successfully pass a competitive examination called by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.

 

Requirements to apply for the entrance exams

Before starting to prepare for the entrance exams, make sure you meet the established requirements:

  1. Spanish nationality.
  2. Minimum age of 18. No age limit.
  3. University degree. Any degree or undergraduate qualification is valid.
  4. Proficiency in languages. Knowledge of foreign languages, especially English and French, is essential.
  5. Full legal capacity.

 

What are the entrance exams for the Diplomatic Career like?

The selection process consists of two main phases:

1. Theoretical part:

  • Multiple-choice exam. It assesses knowledge of history, politics, law, and economics based on the official syllabus.
  • Language exam. Generally, a good command of English and French is required, but other languages may earn additional points. The exam consists of both a written and an oral component.
  • Essay. This exam consists of a written part, in which candidates develop a current topic, and an oral part, in which they present their written work and are then asked questions.
  • Oral presentation of topics. The candidate must orally present four topics, randomly selected, from the syllabus outlined in the exam announcement.

2. Selective course at the Diplomatic School

Candidates who pass the previous phases enter the Diplomatic School, where they receive specialised training.

After passing the exams, the successful candidates will join the 77th class of the Spanish Diplomatic Service. Their predecessors, 16 women and 12 men, received their diplomas in a ceremony presided over by His Majesty the King last February. All of them have been assigned to their first posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation since the beginning of the year.
