INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

Spain reaffirms its commitment to peace on the International Day of Peace

Every 21 September, we commemorate the International Day of Peace, a day devoted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1981 to strengthening the ideals of peace among nations and communities. This year, Spain is once again reaffirming its commitment to a world that is more peaceful, safer and fairer; our country places diplomacy, multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes at the heart of its foreign action.

Spain’s commitment to peace and multilateralism

Spain champions peace as a collective undertaking that calls for international cooperation, strong institutions and effective multilateralism. In that regard, our country works with its partners to foster stability, human security and the dignity of all people, all of which are vital to lasting peace. Spain’s foreign policy promotes conflict prevention, dialogue and support for global initiatives to reduce violence and encourage peaceful coexistence.

Peace as a holistic value: more than just an absence of war

The International Day of Peace is a reminder that peace is more than just an absence of armed conflict. Rather, it signifies security, dignity, cooperation and opportunities in everyday life, all of which Spain considers to be pillars of resilient societies. The General Assembly added a key dimension to the day in 2001: a call for a global ceasefire and non-violence, highlighting the need for a cessation of hostilities and for protection of affected populations.

The day is also an invitation to raise awareness of the culture of peace, based on education, dialogue and cooperation between communities. Spain emphasizes the importance of these tools in preventing violence, increasing social cohesion, and promoting reconciliation in conflict-affected settings.

Recognition of victims and of those working towards stability

The International Day of Peace is also an occasion to honour the victims of conflicts and acknowledge the work of those who contribute to reconciliation and stability. Spain remains firmly committed to protecting those affected by violence and to supporting initiatives that aim to restore the social fabric and promote justice.
