Pope Leo XIV received in audience, in the Vatican City, the Minister for Foreign Affairs

José Manuel Albares also met with the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, His Excellency Msgr Gallagher. During his visit to Rome, the Minister’s other activities included officially opening the new Chancellery of the Spanish Embassy in Italy.​

On Monday, 4 May, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, visited Rome and the Vatican City. He was received in audience by His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, ahead of the Pontiff’s visit to Spain from 6 to 12 June.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs also held a meeting with His Excellency Msgr Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, during which they discussed the role of the Vatican with regard to the ongoing conflicts around the world, among other important issues.​


During the visit to Rome, Minister Albares also officially opened the new Chancellery of the Spanish Embassy in Italy, in the historic Palazzo San Giacomo degli Spagnoli, in Piazza Navona.




Culture as a co​​​nnection for multilateral dialogue

The Minister for Foreign Affairs also engaged in a number of cultural activities during his visit to Rome.

  • At the new Chancellery, he inaugurated a photography exhibition entitled “Spain and Italy: 50 Years celebrated in pictures, organized in collaboration with the EFE news agency, to commemorate democratic freedoms being won.
  • He attended a meeting with celebrated Hispanists at the Residence of the Ambassador to Italy.

A diplomatic, cultural and historical visit to strengthen Spain’s bonds with the Holy See and with Rome.
