SEMINAR IN MADRID

“Spain and ECOWAS. Common challenges, shared opportunities”

Minister Albares stresses that “ECOWAS and its Member States are our natural partners as we share challenges which, in a complex and shifting international and regional context, require a concerted response”

March 16, 2023

The seminar is structured in four segments that address economic and inclusive development, peace and security, democracy and human rights and the knowledge and promotion of the Spanish language. The seminar will also host a work meeting to advance the design of the new cooperation programme between AECID and ECOWAS, with a view to launching a renewed and strengthened phase of Spanish cooperation with the organisation.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) gathers together 15 countries and plays a very active role in the region, both in promoting regional stability, development and integration, and in defending democracy. Spain’s priority interest in ECOWAS can be seen in its broad cooperation programme with the organisation, underpinned by the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2005 and further developed in the Joint Declaration of 2009.
