Speaking to an audience made up of government representatives from the 27 EU Member States and some 50 companies, the President of the Government of Spain stressed that our future Presidency of the Council of the European Union will place the search for greater strategic autonomy that is both socially fair and environmentally sustainable among its main priorities. Accordingly, an investigative project has been started up on the matter, the conclusions of which should be ready for the informal European Council scheduled to be held in Granada in October.

In his speech, Pedro Sánchez stated that, despite the ‘tariff war’ between the United States and China, along with other conflicts, the trade figures indicate that “the world is not fragmented”, and encouraged the European Union “to take advantage of the situation and open up more to the world”, strengthening it and stepping up its commitment to multilateralism.

President Sánchez was accompanied at the presentation by Minister José Manuel Albares, who reiterated that “strategic autonomy will be one of the fundamental lines of work of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU” in the second half of this year.
