This Tuesday, the Council of Ministers has approved a package of multi-year voluntary contributions totalling 72,365,000 euros from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), which reports to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, to international organisations, programmes and funds, and other international bodies.
Multi-year contributions ensure predictability and continuity in the funding of international organisations. This approach reinforces Spain’s role as a reliable partner in the multilateral system, in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the need to provide sustained responses to increasingly complex crises.
Through these contributions, Spanish Cooperation continues to promote cooperation based on international solidarity, effectiveness on the ground and multilateralism, which, in the words of Minister Albares, “has proven to be the best instrument for preserving international peace and security”.
Contributions to the United Nations system
This dossier includes multi-year contributions to organisations such as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which play a key role in responding to global crises and promoting development. The UNDP, in fact, has been the fund that has received the most contributions within the United Nations framework, with over 8 million euros.
Also within the United Nations, the largest contributions have gone to UN Women, with over 8 million euros, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), with 4 million euros and 4,050,000 euros respectively. Other notable contributions include that made to the World Health Organisation, amounting to 6 million euros. Also noteworthy is the contribution of 6 million euros to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation channels these contributions to support the work of international organisations, strengthening collective action in the face of global challenges such as humanitarian emergencies, climate change, hunger, poverty and inequality.
Multilateralism and sustainable development
In a global context marked by drastic cuts in official development assistance (ODA), protracted crises, conflicts and climate emergencies, multilateral cooperation is establishing itself as an essential tool for protecting the most vulnerable populations and moving towards sustainable and inclusive development.
Outside the United Nations system, Spain has also approved substantial contributions to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Latin American Centre for Development Administration, amongst others.
