PRESS RELEASE 061

Albares travels to Italy and the Vatican to strengthen bilateral relations

  • The itinerary includes a meeting with his counterpart from the Holy See and the opening of the Chancellery of the Spanish Embassy in Rome

Today
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, is due to travel to Italy and the Vatican on Monday, 4 May. The Minister will hold a working meeting with his counterpart from the Holy See, Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, with the aim of strengthening the good state of bilateral relations and in the run-up to Pope Leo XIV’s forthcoming visit to Spain in June.

Albares will also officially inaugurate the Chancellery’s headquarters at the Palazzo di Santiago degli Spagnoli in Piazza Navona. The new headquarters are the result of an ambitious restoration project promoted by the Obra Pía and co-financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. This restoration, which reflects Spain’s commitment to the conservation of its historical heritage, showcases its presence in Italy.

At the Chancellery Minister Albares will visit an exhibition by the EFE news agency entitled ‘Spain and Italy: 50 Years to Remember’, which complements the opening of the Chacellery from both an institutional and visual perspective. The exhibition aims to link the memory of the Spanish-Italian relationship in the most recent contemporary period with the physical space that will house it from now on, forming part of ‘Spain in Freedom’, the Spanish Government’s initiative commemorating the restoration of democratic freedoms.

The Minister plans to conclude the visit with a meeting with Italian Hispanists.
