PRESS RELEASE 034

Albares conveys Spain's support and solidarity to counterparts in Middle East

The minister has spoken with the Foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, Oman and Bahrain

Today
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, held a wide-ranging series of diplomatic talks today with his counterparts from the countries most affected by regional destabilisation in the Middle East. In addition to conveying Spain's support and solidarity, the minister explored diplomatic initiatives for de-escalation and negotiation.

For the time being, Albares has spoken with the Foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, Oman and Bahrain, but further contacts in the coming hours and days cannot be ruled out.

Spain's position in this conflict has been clear from the outset. Our country defends international law, de-escalation, a return to the negotiating table and peace. Albares reiterated this in his conversations today and in the numerous contacts he has had with these countries over the last two weeks.

Extension to Lebanon

In view of the spread of the conflict, Albares has once again reiterated to his Lebanese counterpart Spain's strong condemnation of the Israeli attacks against his country, the  security and stability of which are vital for the entire region. We also condemn Hezbollah's missile launches against Israel.

It is essential that all parties fully comply with Security Council resolution 1701, as well as with the ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024. Spain has therefore urged Israel to fulfil its obligations under international law. It has also demanded that Hezbollah cease its attacks against Israel and submit to the Lebanese Government's disarmament plan.

The Lebanese people, the minister insisted, cannot be held hostage to an external conflict and deserve a future of stability, peace and prosperity. Spain supports Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity and will continue to support the Lebanese people with an aid package of €9 million.
