Albares meets with Director-General of Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

The minister has reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to the OPCW through the National Strategy against the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, adopted in 2026.

Today
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, met on Tuesday with the Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Fernando Arias. The minister conveyed his firm support for his leadership during a period of critical transformation for the Organisation, as well as for the decisive work carried out in the areas of verification, investigation and attribution.

Albares reaffirmed to the Spanish diplomat Spain’s commitment to disarmament. This commitment has been reinforced by the adoption of the first National Strategy against the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, approved by the Council of Ministers in February 2026. The document elevates the fight against chemical threats to a sectoral priority within National Security.

The minister also emphasised that “Spain will continue to fulfil its commitments to ensure that the Organisation maintains its operational capacity for inspection and verification. We will continue to contribute actively to its work through voluntary financial contributions to various funds, particularly those linked to the Syrian dossier, as well as to initiatives such as the REDHISPANA project, which aims to strengthen analytical, prevention and cooperation capacities in the Ibero-American region”.
