Yesterday

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, met today in Madrid with the Estonian Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, with whom he confirmed the affinity between the two countries and the synergies in key areas such as security, defence and EU affairs.

The minister also reiterated to his counterpart Spain's commitment to the security of the region in the context of the Russian war against Ukraine.

‘Spain is fully committed to the security and defence of Estonia and the eastern flank,’ said the minister, who recalled that, since 2015, Spain has participated in the military presence in the region and in the country alongside other NATO members, as a staunch ally in strengthening air defence in the region, especially in the context of the Alliance's deterrence efforts in the context of the war in Ukraine.

Close collaboration

Defence is another area where cooperation between the two countries is excellent. The Spanish defence industry is the eighth largest supplier to the Estonian Armed Forces, with extensive experience in the country and growing demand.

In the field of economic relations, the participation of Spanish companies with extensive international experience in interconnection and infrastructure projects of great importance for the country, the region and the European Union as a whole, such as Rail Baltica, has been highlighted.

Also at the bilateral level, the ministers discussed the promotion of Spanish in the Estonian education system and Spain's commitment to creating new bilingual sections in the country's schools, following the example of the Gymnasium Mustamäe secondary school in Tallinn, whose section will open its doors in 2026-2027.

International affairs

The challenges facing the European Union, the need for Europe to achieve true sovereignty and greater responsibility in defence matters, including the development of additional capabilities and the strengthening of critical supply chains, were among the other topics discussed during the meeting.

Finally, the ministers also addressed the challenges facing transatlantic relations, as well as the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, in which Spain supports all diplomatic efforts being made to achieve peace.
