Today, 7 April, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, received Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, leader of the Belarusian democratic opposition, with whom he discussed developments in the country.
During the meeting, Albares took the opportunity to reaffirm Spain’s commitment to the democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people and the call for the unconditional release of all political prisoners.
Albares also expressed his support for the victims of Lukashenko’s regime, which last year took the form of a voluntary contribution from Spain of €50,000 to the International Humanitarian Fund for Victims of Repression in Belarus, a contribution that will be renewed this financial year.
At the end of the meeting, Minister Albares received the Cross of Good Neighborhood for his work on behalf of Belarus. This is an award given to prominent figures for their service to the Belarusian people and their contributions to democracy, society and the country’s development.
