The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, met on Thursday 14 May with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait, His Excellency Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, with whom he discussed the main issues on the bilateral and regional agenda. This was their first meeting since His Excellency Sheikh Jarrah’s appointment in February 2026.
The two ministers expressed their satisfaction with the excellent bilateral relationship and its potential for future development. Albares thanked his counterpart for visiting Spain at such a difficult time for his country and highlighted the existing ties between Spain and Kuwait, as well as efforts to strengthen institutional cooperation in specific areas. These areas include political affairs, trade, investment, security and defence, culture, and cooperation within the framework of the European Union.
The Spanish Minister took the opportunity to discuss the complex regional situation in the Middle East with his counterpart and reiterated his solidarity with the Kuwaiti people in the face of Iran’s unjustified attacks, praising their restrained stance throughout the conflict. Albares urged all parties to respect the ceasefire until negotiations result in a solution that brings the conflict to an end, calling for restraint and diplomacy. He also reiterated the need to guarantee security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Both Ministers addressed other current regional issues, expressing their concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. They also discussed the need to consolidate a ceasefire in Lebanon. The Ministers called for peace and respect for international law in accordance with the provisions of the United Nations Charter.
