The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, received this morning at the Palace of Viana the leader of the democratic opposition of Belarus, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, to whom he reiterated Spain's firm commitment to freedom and democracy in her country.
During the meeting, they discussed, among other things, the situation of the Belarusian diaspora in Spain and the recent voluntary contribution of our country in support of the victims of the repression by Alexander Lukashenko.
In April 2025, Spain made a contribution to the International Humanitarian Fund for Victims of Repression in Belarus, in support of political prisoners and victims. This aid will help provide comprehensive humanitarian support to the victims of repression in Belarus, as well as to those who are abroad.
War against Ukraine
The increasing militarisation of social life and education in Belarus following the start of the Russian aggression against Ukraine has also been debated. In this regard, the minister has recalled the various packages of sanctions approved by the EU. "We must maintain our pressure on Belarus with restrictive measures, both in response to the internal situation and due to the regime's support for the Russian aggression against Ukraine," Albares has reiterated.
