Spain will host a high-level summit on immunisation, alongside Gavi - the Vaccine Alliance - which gathers representatives from multilateral organisations, governments, companies, academics and civil society, with the aim of analysing the state of vaccination in countries supported by Gavi and work towards the future.
Gavi - the Vaccine Alliance - is a public-private partnership that helps vaccinate almost half the children in the world against fatal and debilitating infectious diseases, particularly in developing countries. Over the course of 2023, it will reach the mid-point of its current strategic cycle (2021-2025) and will celebrate its high-level ministerial event (mid-term review) in Spain.
Gavi has been one of Spain’s main partners in global health over the last two decades and cooperation has been strengthened in the context of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The June meeting will help reinforce this relationship and continue to promote global health.
Spain became a donor to Gavi in 2006, one of the six original partners of the International Financial Facility for Immunisation (IFFIM) and is a major donor to this innovative financial facility, with a total commitment of 290 million euros.
Spain has played a leading role in the response to the Covid-19 pandemic as one of the main vaccine donors through the COVAX delivery mechanism, an alliance set up to guarantee equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines, which has over 190 member countries. To date, COVAX has distributed over 52 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines donated by Spain through its mechanism, and several million additional doses are currently being distributed. Spain has also contributed funds to the COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC).
In addition, Spain was the first donor to the Gavi initiative to introduce the first global vaccine against malaria, which will help save the lives of children on the African continent.
