PRESS RELEASE 013

Spain and Morocco open new goods crossings through customs posts in Ceuta and Melilla

The schedule set by Spain and Morocco at the High-Level Meeting (RAN) at the start of the month continued to be implemented today with two new goods crossings opened through customs posts in Ceuta and Melilla.

February 24, 2023
By undertaking these new operations, progress is made on the roadmap set towards the full, progressive and gradual normalisation to which the two countries committed themselves in order to foster trade exchanges and tackle the atypical trade that had been detected at these border points.

The new trade shipments already include solutions to many of the technical difficulties detected in the pilot project successfully carried out on 27 January. That day saw the milestone that, for the first time, a customs post was opened in Ceuta and the customs post in Melilla was reopened after remaining shut since 2018.

Since then, work has been done to adapt the technical and bureaucratic infrastructure to the needs of of such a customs crossing point in order to move towards full normalisation, with the two countries working together according to the schedule set during the RAN at the start of the month.
