PRESS RELEASE 001

Government repatriates Spanish women and minors from Syrian camps

January 10, 2023
The government has just completed the operation to repatriate two Spanish women and 13 Spanish minors who were living in Syrian refugee camps.

The repatriated Spaniards landed early this morning at Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base (Madrid) in an operation coordinated by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation which also involved the participation of the Ministries of Home Affairs, Defence, Social Rights, Justice and Presidency.

Once in Spanish territory, the two adult women were taken into custody by the Spanish National Police. After their statements are taken, they will be brought before a court in the coming hours, in this case, before the National High Court, which will proceed to legalise their procedural situation. For their part, the social services of the Community of Madrid have taken the 13 minors into their care.

As a result of this operation, which has taken several months to complete due to its complexity and the high-risk situation of the Syrian camps, Spain has followed the same path as its European neighbours – Germany, Belgium, Norway, Ireland, Sweden, Italy, Finland and the Netherlands, among others. In this way, Spain complies with its legal obligations, including those stemming from international treaties.
