PRESS RELEASE 016

José Manuel Albares speaks by phone with Juana Ruiz after her release

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, spoke by phone today with the Spanish aid worker, Juana Ruiz, and expressed his satisfaction at her release.

February 7, 2022
José Manuel Albares spoke by phone with the Spanish aid worker when she reached the West Bank and had met up with her family after being accompanied by Spanish diplomatic staff.

When talking with Minister Albares, Juana Ruiz conveyed to him her “profound gratitude” over the handling of the matter by the Government of Spain to secure her release, and her wish to personally meet the minister. Juana Ruiz stated that she was “very pleased” at the solidarity shown in Spain which, as her children told her, had been fundamental in the release process.

The contact with the aid worker took place just a few hours after the Israeli Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yair Lapid, confirmed to his Spanish colleague the imminent release of the Spanish aid worker. José Manuel Albares thanked his Israeli counterpart for the call confirming her release.

The Spanish minister also took the opportunity to underline the extraordinary work of the services and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation who worked to provide consular assistance to Juana Ruiz and to her family over the course of these months.
