PRESS STATEMENT 082

Spain condemns Houthi attacks against Yemeni Government forces and against Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Yesterday
The Spanish Government strongly condemns the indiscriminate attacks by the Houthis against the troops of Yemen’s internationally recognised Government, as well as against various civilian infrastructure sites in different locations across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Government extends its best wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured in these attacks and expresses its solidarity with their Governments.

Spain expresses its deep concern at the spread of regional instability caused by the Houthis, which threatens both Saudi sovereignty and territorial integrity and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

In light of the resurgence of violence in Yemen, the Spanish Government expresses its deep concern and its support for the Presidential Leadership Council – the internationally recognised government – in its efforts to ensure the country’s stability in the face of attempts to interfere in its internal affairs, in violation of Security Council resolution 2216.

Spain urges the Houthis to cease their attacks and violations of international law, and to put an end to the escalation of violence that threatens stability and security in the Middle East, calling for a return to the negotiating table to move towards a lasting and sustainable solution.
