PRESS STATEMENT 007

Statement on Presidential Elections in Belarus

January 26, 2025
The Government of Spain has closely followed the conduct of the presidential elections in Belarus on 26 January and notes that the process did not meet the minimum democratic standards, with severe restrictions on political participation and the work of independent media.

Spain fully supports the democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people and the democratic opposition, and calls for the holding of free and inclusive elections, with all guarantees, observed by an international mission of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

At the same time, Spain calls for an end to the repression and for full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, including those of opinion, demonstration and political participation, as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners.
