Spain condemns the attack on members of the Customs Surveillance Service

Spain condemns the attack suffered by members of the Customs Surveillance Service who intervened in an operation to combat smuggling on Spanish territory and waters close to the Rock of Gibraltar, resulting in serious injury.

The government also strongly rejects the terms of the joint statement issued today by representatives of the British Government in relation to the incident, along with the claims for the alleged British sovereignty of the territory and waters of Gibraltar contained in the statement. This statement is particularly incomprehensible at a time in which Spain has laid out an agreement to create a zone of shared prosperity.

The Government of Spain demands effective measures in the fight against smuggling, which prejudices the whole zone, and wishes the Spanish agents a speedy recovery.
