The Government of Spain welcomes the start of peace talks which, under the leadership of the African Union, are taking place in Pretoria between the Government of Ethiopia and representatives of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Spain hopes that these talks will unfold in the most propitious way to find a solution to a conflict that is having serious consequences for the country and for the people affected.
In this regard, Spain calls on all parties to cease hostilities in order to prevent further loss of human life and destruction. The free access by humanitarian organisations to the people affected, along with respect for the work of humanitarian workers, must also be guaranteed.
Spain thanks South Africa for its important role in hosting these talks. It also conveys all its support to the work of the High Representative of the African Union, Olusegun Obasanjo, and the other two members of the panel, former Deputy President of South Africa, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, who, in conjunction with other regional and international efforts, are contributing to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in the north of Ethiopia.
