H.M. the King to Travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico

January 21, 2022

His Majesty the King of Spain will travel to Puerto Rico on Monday, January 24, in honor of the 500th anniversary of the founding of the capital, San Juan. This will be His Majesty’s second visit to the island, following His trip in 2016 to open the VII Congress of the Spanish Language, together with H.M. the Queen.

While in Puerto Rico, from January 24 to 26, King Felipe will meet with the Governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, at Santa Catalina Palace, and will participate in an event sponsored by the Mayor of San Juan, Miguel Romero.

Moreover, His Majesty the King is set to open the Economic and Business Forum, which will be attended by representatives of the Spanish and Puerto Rican business community, and meet with members of the Spanish community at Casa de España. H.M. the King will also visit cultural exhibitions about Juan Ramón Jiménez and the legacy of Pau Casals, as well as the Museum of San Juan and San José Church.

King Felipe’s presence in San Juan highlights the close relationship between Spain and the United States, particularly Puerto Rico, an island with which Spain shares a special historical, human, and cultural heritage. This visit also accentuates the soundness of political, economic, and social ties, which have been increasingly strengthened in recent years.

H.M. the King will be accompanied by Spanish Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism Reyes Maroto, and State Secretary for Foreign and Global Affairs Ángeles Moreno Bau.
