Study visa

Visa for stays exceeding 90 days for studies, training, internships or voluntary work. This visa may also be issued for stays for au pairs and for conversation class assistants.  

Study stays of less than 90 days do not require a study visa. Depending on the applicant's nationality, a short-stay visa may be required (see “Schengen visas"). 

The following family members may obtain a visa to accompany the student: 

  • The spouse or unmarried partner.
  • Children who are minors or who have a disability. 

Visas for students' family members do not constitute work permits. 

Activities for which a study visa may be obtained​​​ 

  • Full-time studies at an authorized school that will lead to the obtainment of a degree or certificate of studies.
  • Doctorate studies.
  • Training activities.
  • Student mobility programmes at compulsory and/or non-compulsory secondary education level at an officially recognized teaching or scientific centre.
  • Training placements at public or private bodies or entities that cannot be covered by internship visas (see “Internship visa").
  • Volunteer services in the framework of programmes pursuing public interest goals.
  • Au pair programmes.
  • Conversation class assistants.

Required documents for the student​​ ​​

1. National visa application formIt opens in new window. Each applicant must complete and sign a visa application, filling in each of its sections. If the applicant is a minor, one of their parents or a duly accredited representative must sign the application. 

2. Passport  (Original and Photocopy of the identity pages). The passport must be valid for a minimum of three months from the date of completion of their stay in the Schengen territory, with at least two blank pages available.

3. Singaporean IC (Original and Photocopy): employment card/ dependant pass/ student pass/ PR card (and re-entry permit).

4. Letter of acceptance from the Spanish Education Institution (original) addressed to this Embassy: letter of acceptance of the applicant as a full-time student from the Spanish University/ School, which indicates the name of the school/institution, complete address, phone, e-mail and registration number of the school/institution with the Ministry of Education and Science of Spain, payments of fees for study, the duration of the program (start and end) and hours of study per week (minimum 20h/week).

5. Letter of your School/University/College in Singapore stating the programme you will be doing, duration, place, etc.  

 6. Proof of financial means​: for the period of study in Spain. Proof can be any one of the following:

  • University Charter School or Curriculum assuming full financial responsibility for the accommodation and meals.
  • The latest 3 months bank statements from the student's bank account with a minimum account balance of €600 per month of stay in Spain.
  • Proof of award of grant, loan or other financial aid at least €600 per month for room and board.
  • Letter of sponsorship of parents assuming full financial responsibility for an amount of at least €600 per month of stay in Spain for their son/daughter.  This letter must be accompanied by: 
      1. The latest 3 months bank statements / passbook (savings accounts, current account, bank deposits, etc. showing transactions may be accepted) from the parent's bank account with a minimum account balance of €550 per month of stay in Spain. Singaporean bank accounts in either SGD; EUR; or USD will be accepted. The name of the account holder has to be stated in every document. (Original and Photocopy)
      2. Photocopy of passport and IC of both parents
      3. Birth certificate of the student legalized or Apostilled; NOTE: see final note about authentication of certificates.
      4. Parental authorization form signed before the consular officer. NOTE: see final note about authentication of certificates. 
        Suggested reading: "Hereby I, (name of parent) I am responsible for the costs of accommodation and meals for my (child name ...) for a minimum of € 550 a month for its stay in Spain from .. DATE.. to .. DATE, and any emergency that might arise. I hereby enclose a true copy of my bank statements for the latest three months, my passport/ID and my child's birth certificate.... etc .. "

7. Health insurance. Certificate in Spanish issued by an Insurance Company operating in Spain specifying

    • Name of applicant.
    • Start date of the coverage.
    • The insurance must cover all risks normally covered for nationals and must be maintained for the entire duration of the authorization.
    • The health insurance must not have a deficiency-exclussion due to pre-existing conditions, copayment, or coverage limit; it must cover 100% of the medical, hospital, and out-of-hospital expenses.
    • Insurances companies registered in Spain: Aseguradoras y Reaseguradoras (mineco.es)
    • An Insurance card will not be accepted as proof of coverage.
    • ​​Travel insurance is not accepted. 


8. FOR PERIOD LONGER THAN 180 DAYS: 

8.1 Medical certificate:

 This certificate must be on letterhead and signed in handwriting by a doctor (MD). The official seal of the health centre will not be accepted in lieu of a signature of the physician. The validity of this certificate is 3 months from the date of issue.  The doctor may also use this sample as a guide to write their own certificate. Remember that it must specifically mention the WHO International Health Regulation (2005)

This certificate verifies that:

Mr./Ms. .............................................................................................................................. is free of drug addiction, mental illness, and does not suffer from any disease that could cause serious repercussions to public health according to the specifications of the International Health Regulations of 2005. These contagious diseases include, but are not limited to smallpox, poliomyelitis by wild polio virus, the human influenza caused by a new subtype of virus and the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), cholera, pneumonic plague, yellow fever, viral hemorrhagic fevers (e.g.: Ebola, Lassa, Marbug), West Nile Virus and other illnesses of special importance nationally or regionally (e.g.: Dengue Fever, Rift Valley Fever, and meningococcal disease).

8.2 Criminal record of the past five years: This certificate must be issued by the police authorities of the countries where the applicant has resided for the past five years. The certificate shall be three months from the date of issue. The certificate must be legalized by the Spanish Consulate in that country or Apostilled if the country is member of the Apostilled. NOTE: see final note about authentication of certificates. Criminal record certificate will be presented only in the case of children over 14 years.

9. Applicants under 18:

               1. They have to come to apply with the parents

               2. Parental authorization form (Will be provided the application´s day):

                         • When Parents are in Singapore: Parental Authorization must be signed by both parents before the Consular Officer upon application for the minor.

                         • When Parents are in Singapore:  parental authorization form must be signed and legalized before the  corresponding Embassy/Consulate of Spain in the 3rd country. NOTE: see final note about authentication of certificates

                3. Photocopy of passport and IC of both parents

10. Spouses who accompany the principal applicant must do their application by submitting:

                 1. A separate application accompanied by all document​s listed above

               2. Marriage Certificate Apostilled or Legalized. NOTE: see final note about authentication of certificates            

                 3. Photocopy of passport and IC of main applicant

                4. If the spouse is being sponsored by the main applicant: Letter of sponsorship assuming full financial responsibility for the spouse's stay in Spain plus copy of the documents for financial guarantee.

11. The children accompanying the principal applicant must do their application by submitting:

               1. A separate application accompanied by all documents listed above

               2. Birth Certificate legalized or Apostilled. NOTE: see final note about authentication of certificates  

               3. Photocopy of passport and IC of both parents

          4. Letter of sponsorship assuming full financial responsibility for the child's stay in Spain plus copy of the documents for financial guarantee.

12. Proof o​f the representative's identity and capacity. If the applicant is a minor, he/she must submit a copy of one of his/her parents’ or guardians’ ID or passport, as well as a document proving kinship. The originals must be shown when submitting the application. If the application is submitted through a representative, a copy of the representative’s ID or passport, as well as power of attorney or a document accrediting the representative relationship, must be submitted. An original and notarized copy of the applicant’s birth certificate, showing the parent-child relationship, or the ruling or decision by which a legal guardian was established, must be submitted to prove kinship; these documents must be issued a maximum of 90 days prior to submitting the visa application. Non-Spanish documents must be authenticated with the Apostille of The Hague. The copies of the identification documents must be notarized. If the visa application is submitted by mail, the originals of the identification documents must be shown when the passport with the visa is retrieved.

13. Authorization of legal representatives. If the applicant is a minor, he/she must submit the original and a copy of the parents’ or guardians’ notarized authorization for the minor to go to Spain and indicate the person who will be responsible for him/her during his/her stay in Spain. This notarized authorization must expressly include the following information of the person who will be responsible for the minor in Spain: full legal name, DNI or NIE number, address. This person or persons must also submit a notarized copy of his/her ID.

Non-Spanish documents must be authenticated with the Apostille of The Hague and translated into Spanish, if Spanish is not the original language. Copies must be notarized.

If the applicant is a minor, the person or persons respons​ible for the minor during his/her stay in Spain must submit a certificate ensuring they are not a sex offender (certificado de Delitos de Naturaleza Sexual) issued by the Registro Central de Delincuentes Sexuales, part of the Spanish Ministry of Justice (application found here), or express permission for the Spanish Government to obtain said certificate (authorization document found here). This person or persons must also provide a declaration in which they officially take responsibility for the child, which must be authenticated by a Spanish notary public.​

If the applicant is a minor and is traveling alone or with an autho​rized person, an original and notarized copy of power of attorney, signed by both parents or guardians, and authenticated with the Apostille of The Hague, must be submitted, along with a copy of both parents’ or guardians’ passports. If the minor is traveling with an authorized person, said document must also include the following information about the authorized person: full legal name, passport, DNI or NIE number, address, travel dates and route.

If the minor is traveling with only one of his/her parents or guardians, an original and notarized copy of power of attorney signed by the non-traveling parent or guardian must be submitted, authorizing the other parent or guardian to travel with the minor.

When necessary to assess the application, the Consular Office may request additional documents or data and may also ask the applicant to come in for a personal interview. 

13. Payment of the visa fee. A non-refundable  fee is of an amount of 123.40 SGD. For nationals of Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, the United States of America and the United Kingdom different rates are applied for reasons of reciprocity. In these cases, the amount of the fee must be consulted with BLS international.​

NOTE: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON PROCEDURES FOR AUTHENTICATION OF DOCUMENTS:

LEGALIZED/AUTHENTICATED OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS (BIRTH / MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES/CRIMINAL RECORDS CERT)

If the issuing country is member of The Hague Apostille Convention, the certificate must have the APOSTILLE SEAL produced by the central authority of the issuing country. Singapore is member of The Apostille of the Hague.

If the issuing country is NOT a member of The Hague Apostille Convention:

 - 3rd countries issued certificates: a DOUBLE LEGALISATION procedure is required (1st by the issuing country and 2nd by the Embassy/Consulate of Spain in that issuing country)

• BIRTH / MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES issued by countries members of the CONVENTION ON THE ISSUE OF MULTILINGUAL EXTRACTS FROM CIVIL-STATUS RECORDS signed at Vienna on 8 September 1976, do not need APOSTILLE NOR LEGALISATION.  You can check here the list of countries which are parties of the Convention on Multilingual Certificates:

Procedure​ 

This Consular Office is competent to accept visa applications from individuals residing in the consular district or who are regularly in the consular district for study purposes even if they are not a resident. 

Applying for a study visa also entails applying for a study stay permit. 

  • Who can apply for a visa: Visa applications must be submitted in person by the applicant or by one of their parents if the applicant is a minor.
  • Visa application period: Visa applications must be submitted sufficiently in advance of the beginning of the pertinent study programmes, as the procedure entails consultations with other authorities.  ​
  • Proof of receipt: The Consular Office will provide the applicant with proof of receipt of the application with a code that enables them to check the status of the dossier through the following link: https://sutramiteconsular.maec.es/Home.aspxIt opens in new window  Once the status is approuved the applicant will have to book a new appointment for collection.   • Rectifying the application: The Consular Office may ask the applicant to submit any missing documents, or to provide additional documents or data that are necessary for a decision regarding the application.   The applicant may also be called in for a personal interview. 
  • Decision period: The legal period for reaching a decision is of 1 month from the day after the application submission date, but this period may be extended if an interview or additional documents are requested. 
  • Collecting the visa: The visa must be collected in person by the applicant or by their representative (if the applicant is a minor) within a maximum period of 2 months, counted as of the day after the date on which the favourable decision is notified. The Consular Office will inform the applicant regarding the procedure for the return of the passport and any other original documentation.  
  • Refusal of the visa or study stay permit: Refusals of the visa or study stay permit will always be notified in writing, setting forth the grounds on which the decision adopted was based. 
  • Appeals: If a study stay permit or visa is refused, the applicant may submit an appeal for reconsideration to this Consular Office within 1 month of the day following the date on which notification of the refusal is received. An application for judicial review may also be filed with the High Court of Justice of Madrid within the 2-month period beginning the day after the date on which the applicant receives notification of the visa refusal or of the dismissal of the reconsideration appeal. 
  • Validity period of the visa: If the study stay does not exceed 6 months, the visa will be valid for the entire stay and it will not be necessary to obtain a Foreigner Identity Card. 

    ​If the study stay is for longer than 6 months, the visa will be valid for a 90-day stay. The student must apply for a Foreigner Identity Card within a period of 1 month from their entry into Spain, at the Foreign Nationals' Office or the Police Station of the province in which the permit was processed.
