National Visas - Study visa

Visa for stays longer than 90 days for higher education studies or post-compulsory secondary education, student mobility, volunteering services, and training activities. The stay for studies of up to 90 days does not require a study visa. Depending on nationality, a short-term visa may be needed (see 'Schengen Visas').

The following family members can obtain a visa to accompany the holder of a higher education or specialized healthcare training visa:

• The spouse, registered partner, or stable partner.

• The children of the holder, or of the spouse, registered partner or stable partner, who are minors or who require support due to disability or illness.

Activities that allow obtaining a student visa

  1. Higher education, which includes those studies, whether university or not, in a recognized higher education institution or center in Spain that lead to the obtaining of degrees corresponding to the levels and qualifications established in Royal Decree 1027/2011, of July 15, which establishes the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education. Furthermore, university studies leading to proprietary degrees that, exercising their autonomy and as provided in university regulations, may be taught by recognized higher education institutions will also be included, and, in addition, the Master's degrees in Vocational Training provided for in Royal Decree 659/2023, of July 18, which develops the organization of the Vocational Training System will also be included. The higher studies referred to in the previous paragraph may include, where applicable, the undertaking of a preparatory course for such studies, as well as the mandatory training practices, which will also be considered higher education. University studies may be pursued in either face-to-face or hybrid mode according to the established study plans and in compliance with the current regulations regarding universities. The rest of the higher studies may be conducted in either face-to-face or hybrid mode in accordance with the current education regulations, provided that at least 50 percent of the taught program is in-person.
  2. Post-compulsory secondary education at an authorized educational institution in Spain, as part of a full-time program, leading to a recognized degree. The studies can be taken in-person or in a blended format according to current education regulations, provided that at least 50 percent of the curriculum delivered at the institutions is in-person. Regarding vocational training, the medium-level training cycles and the Vocational Specialist titles as outlined in Royal Decree 659/2023 of July 18 will be included in the scope of this section.
  3. Mobility program for compulsory or post-compulsory secondary students in order to pursue a compulsory or post-compulsory secondary education program at an officially recognized educational or scientific institution within the framework of a student exchange program or educational project.
  4. Volunteering, providing a volunteer service, understood as the activities carried out by legally established and registered volunteer entities in the records set by the competent authorities, as part of programs that pursue objectives of general interest for a nonprofit cause.
  5. Training activities, considered as such:
    1. Functions as foreign conversation assistants in Spanish educational centers registered in the State Register of non-university teaching centers or in the corresponding official records.
    2. Teaching of Spanish language studies or of the co-official languages in Spain, taught in person at official language schools or in centers accredited in Spain by the Cervantes Institute or by the analogous public body of the corresponding co-official language, provided that it is not the mother tongue or the official language of the country of which the foreign person is a national.
    3. Preparatory courses for the selective tests for access to specialized health training positions.
    4. Conducting training leading to the obtainment of the technical aptitude certification or professional qualification according to the relationship of training activities, duration and conditions that will be established by Resolution of the competent body.
    5. Conducting complete training, neither modular nor partial, in an authorized teaching center in Spain, leading to the obtainment of professional certificates from the offers of the vocational training system of level C, in its levels 2 and 3, with the requirements and conditions established in Organic Law 3/2022, of March 31, on the organization and integration of Vocational Training and its regulatory development.

Necessary documents

All foreign documents must be submitted legalized or apostilled, and if they are drafted in a language other than Spanish, accompanied by the corresponding translation.

  1. National visa application form: National visa application form each applicant must complete all sections and sign a visa application. If the applicant is a minor, one of their legal representatives will sign the application.
  2. Photograph: A recent passport-sized color photograph, with a light background, taken from the front, without dark glasses, reflections, or clothing that conceals the oval of the face.
  3. Valid and current passport: original and a photocopy of the page or pages with biometric data of the passport. The passport must have a minimum validity of one year and have at least two blank pages. Passports issued more than 10 years ago are not accepted.
  4. Proof of admission and payment of tuition for the activity. Original and a copy of the document that proves:
    • In the case of higher studies, documents that certify admission and payment of tuition at an authorized educational institution for the completion of a study program
    • Admission to a student mobility program: in this case, proof of admission to an educational center, hosting by a family or institution, and a commitment from the program organizer to cover expenses will also be provided
    • The agreement with the organization responsible for a volunteer program
  5. Proof of the availability of economic means: original and a copy of the documents proving that the applicant (or their legal representative) has sufficient economic means to cover the expenses of the student's stay and return, as well as those of accompanying family members. The minimum amount required is equivalent to 100% of the IPREM. To this amount, 75% of the IPREM must be added for the first family member and 50% of the IPREM for each additional family member. If it can be proven that accommodation has already been paid for in advance for the entire stay, this amount will be reduced.
  6. Health insurance: original and a copy of the certificate of public or private health insurance contracted with an insurance entity authorized to operate in Spain, providing benefits similar to those offered by the common basic portfolio of healthcare services of the National Health System, valid for the duration of the intended stay.
  7. Criminal record certificate: when the duration of stay exceeds 180 days, applicants over the age of legal majority must submit the original and a copy of the criminal record certificate issued by the country or countries of residence in the last 5 years.
  8. Medical certificate: original and a copy of a medical certificate certifying that the applicant does not suffer from diseases that may have severe repercussions on public health in accordance with the International Health Regulations of 2005.
  9. Proof of residence in the consular jurisdiction: Resident card issued by local authorities. This will be verified through the original and photocopy of a document that proves residence in the jurisdiction of this Consular Office.
  10.  Proof of the identity and capacity of the representative: if the applicant is a minor, a copy of the identity document or passport of the parent and the document proving the relationship must be presented. The originals will be shown at the time of submitting the application. If the visa is requested through a representative, a copy of the representative's identity document or passport and the power of attorney or document proving the representation must be submitted.
  11. Authorization from legal representatives: if the foreign person is a minor and is under the care of a third party who does not hold parental authority or guardianship, they must have the authorization of both parents or the person who holds parental authority or guardianship exclusively for the intended stay in Spain for the purpose of carrying out the activity in question, with confirmation from the center, organization, entity, or body responsible for the activity for which they have been authorized and the intended duration of stay.
  12. Payment of the visa fee: Fees The fee payment will be made in cash.

 

Necessary documents for family members

For each family member accompanying the student, it is necessary to submit:

  • Copy of the passport or Foreign Identity Card of the student.
  • The documents listed in the previous list with numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 12. If applicable, those related to numbers 7, 10, and 11.
  • Additionally, they must provide certificates that prove the family relationship with the student: marriage certificate, registered partnership, or birth certificate, as applicable.

 

Procedure

This Consular Office is competent to accept visa applications from individuals residing within the consular jurisdiction.

The application for a study visa also entails an application for a residence permit for studies.

  • Legitimized party: the visa application must be submitted in person by the applicant, or by one of their parents, if they are a minor. It can also be submitted through a duly accredited representative.
  • Deadline to apply for the visa: the visa must be applied for two months in advance of the start of studies or training, unless justified reasons are provided that prevent submission in such advance.
  • Place of submission: All applications shouldbe submitted through BLS
  • Proof of submission: the Consular Office will give the applicant a receipt for having submitted the application. https://sutramiteconsular.maec.es
  • Correction of the application: the Consular Office may ask the applicant to submit any missing documents or to provide additional documents or information necessary to resolve the application. It may also summon the applicant for a personal interview.
  • Deadline for resolution: if the resolution regarding the residence permit is favorable, the Consular Office will decide on the residence visa within a maximum period of one month.

  • Denial of the residence permit for studies or the visa: if applicable, the denial of the residence permit for studies or the visa will always be notified in writing, stating the reasons on which the decision is based.
  • Appeals: in case of denial of the student residence permit or visa, the applicant can file an appeal before this Consular Office within one month from the day following the date they receive the denial notification. They can also file a contentious-administrative appeal before the High Court of Justice of Madrid within two months from the day following the date they receive the denial notification of the visa or the dismissal of the appeal.
  • Visa validity: if the authorized stay does not exceed 180 days, the visa will be valid for the entire stay, and it will not be necessary to obtain a Foreigner Identity Card. If the authorized stay exceeds 180 days, the visa will be valid for 365 days of stay. The interested party must apply for a Foreigner Identity Card within one month of their entry into Spain at the provincial Police Station.
