Zahra Joya is an Afghan journalist who founded Rukhshana Media, a news outlet publishing in Persian and English, which she runs from London. Ana Carbajosa has extensive experience as a correspondent and special envoy to conflict zones. Both described the dire situation facing Afghan women and girls since the Taliban seized power and explained the work they are doing to improve their circumstances.
The Ambassador conveyed Spain's firm commitment to Afghan women, whom we support at the United Nations and in other international forums by promoting resolutions and declarations, as well as by organizing events to denounce human rights violations committed by the Taliban. Furthermore, Spanish embassies in Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey have facilitated the relocation to Spain of female judges, prosecutors, human rights defenders, and journalists whose lives were in danger in Afghanistan. Twenty girls from the Hazara community and their families—victims of the school bombing in September 2022—have benefited from Spanish protection. The Spanish Government has also given a voice to Afghan women in exile by organizing the "HearUs" conferences; the fourth of which is scheduled for December 2026.
