Ambassador Aparici welcomed the representatives from Elche, who outlined their goal of promoting the city as a tourist destination for British visitors by showcasing its history (the Dama de Elche), its culture (the Misteri d’Elx), and attractions such as its beaches and the Palmeral—the largest palm grove in Europe.
To conclude the visit, the Misteri d’Elx was performed at St Etheldreda’s Church. The Misteri is a sacred-lyrical religious drama with a history spanning over 500 years. It reenacts the Dormition, Assumption, and Coronation of the Virgin Mary. It has been recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2001.
