Over a hundred people gathered at this annual event to honour the 2500 British and Irish volunteers, who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39).
Union representatives and several associations took part in the act, as well as the relatives of the brigadiers, who praised the heroism and sacrifice of the volunteers who went to Spain to defend freedom. Those involved in the event expressed their admiration for the brigades and warned of the current dangers of the retreat of civil rights. The director of the Marx Memorial Library of London spoke about the project to digitise the archives of the Spanish Civil War, which are the most important in the United Kingdom.
An Embassy representative and members of several institutions laid a wreath at the memorial to the international brigades in Jubilee Park on the South Bank of London.
