During the renovation work on the façade of the Spanish Embassy in Copenhagen, a scaffolding banner has been installed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Spain's accession to the European Union.
The artwork by artist Jordi Comas (Fert.one) depicts Europe in the form of the princess who, according to classical myth, was abducted by Zeus disguised as a bull. The rabbit that Europa holds in her arms refers to the ancient origin of the term Hispania, which could mean “land of rabbits" for the Phoenicians.
The scene is set in a colourful garden, a symbol of Spain's diversity, a characteristic we also find in the European Union's motto (“United in Diversity"). Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union is also reproduced, setting out the fundamental values of the Union: respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including those of persons belonging to minorities.
The lamp by Malaga artist Pablo Ruiz Picasso symbolises will and the future, while the hand of the fallen warrior refers to overcoming conflicts and confrontations.
Myth, history and identity intertwine in a composition that invites us to reflect on the roots and the future of Spain and Europe, while celebrating four decades of Spain's membership of the European Union.
