Ambassador Guillermo López Mac-Lellan

Welcome to the web site of the Embassy of Spain to Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, one of the oldest diplomatic representations in Sub-Saharan Africa. Inaugurated in 1960, it was one of the first Spanish diplomatic legations established in this part of the Continent. Currently, Ethiopia is the second most populated country in Africa, with more than 120 million inhabitants, rich in linguistic, ethnic, cultural and religious diversity.

Our function is to ensure smooth bilateral relations with a long-standing friend of Spain, united by centuries of shared history, as shown by the expedition of Pedro Páez in the 17th century. Spain and Ethiopia have been deepening their ties over recent years, in particular, following the visits of H.M. the King in January 2015 and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, in February 2023.

The capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa (“New Flower", in Amharic) is, in turn, the capital of continental integration, headquarters of the African Union and therefore, at the crossroads of various African influences. Likewise, this capital hosts the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA/UNECA), turning it into a truly international metropolis.

This Embassy also works to consolidate the deep historical, cultural, economic and social ties that bind Spain and Africa together, and which underpin the close relationship between our country and the African Union. Spain has strengthened its links with the continental organization in recent years, and increased support for its work towards an integrated, safe and prosperous Africa.

The Consular Section of this Embassy provides various consular services such as Civil Registry or the granting of public notarial instruments. Likewise, consular assistance and protection is provided to all those Spanish citizens in need.

This Embassy also has a Spanish Cooperation Office (AECID) that executes the priorities established in the Partnership Framework with Ethiopia (2022-2027), prioritizing interventions in health, rural development in the face of climate change and gender equality.

The Economic and Commercial Office of this Embassy provides services to all Spanish and Ethiopian companies interested in investing, exporting or importing from or to either of the two countries and the region.

On the cultural side, the promotion of the Spanish language is one of our utmost priorities, seeking to promote and consolidate its use in the African Union.

This Embassy is accredited as well to the Republic of Djibouti and the Republic of Seychelles, so we will assist you with any questions that may arise in relation to both countries. In this domain, the Embassy also provides support to the peace missions in which Spain participates, contributing to the stability of the region. This Embassy also works with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), based in Djibouti, in order to strengthen peace and security in the Horn of Africa.

Finally, all of us at this Embassy work daily to make this web site and its social networks useful instruments of communication with our citizens and for the dissemination of our activities.
