Passengers requiring a visa must apply for their visa at the Consulate of the country where they will be spending the longest period of time. ONLY If they are spending equal time in different Schengen Countries they need to apply at the Consulate of the country of first entry. Schengen Visas are valid for Andorra also.
To apply through this Consulate General you must be a RESIDENT (Bridging visas are not considered residency) and reside in New South Wales, Queensland or Northern Territory or in our Jurisdictions of Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE LODGED AT LEAST 2 MONTHS PRIOR TO YOUR INTENDED DATE OF DEPARTURE FROM AUSTRALIA TO ALLOW SUFFICIENT PROCESSING TIME.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE APPLICANT TO LODGE AN APPLICATION WITH SUFFICIENT TIME FOR PROCESSING.
PLEASE INCLUDE WITH YOUR APPLICATION A PREPAID TRACKABLE RETURN ENVELOPE COMPLETED WITH YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS.
To apply:
1. FORWARD COMPLETE APPLICATION BY POST, INCLUDING RECENT CERTIFIED COPY OF PASSPORT AND VISA FEE.
2. APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY POST TO THIS OFFICE. ONCE IT HAS BEEN RECEIVED AND REVIEWED BY THE CONSULATE (LODGED) YOU WILL BE GIVEN AN APPOINTMENT TO COME TO OUR OFFICE WITH YOUR ORIGINAL PASSPORT AND TO HAVE YOUR BIOMETRICS TAKEN
When applications are received they are placed in a queue and processed in order of being received. We will contact you when we have assessed your application
Each application must incorporate:
1 - ONE VISA APPLICATION FORM, duly completed and one passport sized coloured photograph on a light coloured background, glued (not stapled) to the visa application form on the top right hand corner. Photographs must be printed on quality photographic paper.
2. CERTIFIED COPY OF PASSPORT (must be dated)
(with a validity of at least 12 months (1 year) your passport must have at least 2 blank pages.
3. VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) and Evidence of your current place of residence. valid current Australian residency visa obtained through the following website www.border.gov.au/vevo plus a copy of one of the following: your current Australian drivers licence, Name Card, Student card, or a certified copy of your passport through your local police station.
Please ensure that your current valid passport is linked to your visa or evidence of residency in one of our jurisdictions mentioned above, if you live in PNG, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu or Vanuat
4. CONFIRMED RETURN FLIGHTS
(sub-load/standby tickets must be accompanied by letters from the airline stating employment/relationship of passenger and approximate dates of entry/exit. Open tickets are not acceptable). This must include the full itinerary including departure from Australia and entry into the Schengen States as well as the return.
5. PROOF OF FUNDS i.e. current Australian bank statement showing last 3 months of transactions (minimum of $1403 for 1 to 9 days p.us $156.00 per day over), and proof of payment of accommodation; tour receipt and tour itinerary. Please note that internet printed bank statements that do not show the full name of the applicant, and letters from the bank can not be accepted. Foreign bank statements cannot be accepted.
6. TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICY
(issued in Australia for the duration of the stay covering medical costs and repatriation associated with an accident or sudden illness the insurance must be valid throughout all of the Schengen countries and must cover the whole duration of your stay. The minimum cover is EUR 30,000)
7. DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED BY APPLICANTS DEPENDING OF THE PURPOSE OF TRAVEL
Tourism or visiting Family or Friends
Document from the establishment providing the accommodation or any other appropriate document indicating the accommodation envisaged.
You will need to present an official letter of invitation issued by the police in Spain if you are staying with family or friends. Please note that the invitee will need to apply for this at their nearest police station in Spain.
Business, conference, cultural, religious or political event
- Official invitation letter from a firm, host organisation, educational establishment or an Authority to attend meetings, conferences or events, containing detailed information concerning:
-Address and contacts of invitee entity
-name and position of the countersigning person
-purpose and duration of stay
-person or entity who will bear the travel and living costs (if applicable)
2. Documents providing the applicants employment status in the company
(for eg: contract, proof of social security contribution)
Medical Treatment
- A certificate from a medical doctor or a medical institution advising that the treatment is necessary
- An official document from the receiving medical institution confirming that it can perform the specific medical treatment an estimation of costs and an indication that the patient will be accepted accordingly.
- Proof of prepayment or sufficient financial means to pay for the medical treatment and related expenses.
8. NON REFUNDABLE VISA FEE in Australian dollars:
Stays from 1 to 90 days (single, double or multiple entries) $149.00
Children aged 6 – 12 years $ 74.00
Payment is accepted by MONEY ORDER ONLY made out to: “Consulate General of Spain". Money Orders are obtained through Australia Post offices.
Dependents/spouses of holders of European Union passports are entitled to a visa free of charge if they present a copy of valid European Union passport and a copy of marriage or birth certificates. Those married to Spanish citizens must present their Libro de Familia.

SCHENGEN AGREEMENT
GENERAL INFORMATION
ON VISAS
AUSTRIA, BELGIUM, CROATIA, DENMARK, ESTONIA, FINLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, GREECE, HUNGARY, ICELAND, ITALY, LATVIA, LIECHTENSTEIN, LITHUANIA LUXEMBOURG, MALTA, THE NETHERLANDS, NORWAY, POLAND, PORTUGAL, SLOVAKIA, SLOVENIA, CZECH REPUBLIC, SPAIN, SWEDEN, AND SWITZERLAND have signed an agreement to abolish the internal frontiers between them. The Schengen Agreement --named after the city where it was signed-- came into effect on the 26th of March 1995 and was last updated on the 21st of December 2007.
Australian and New Zealand Passport Holders travelling to the Schengen Territory for holidays or business do not require a visa for stays of a maximum of 90 days, multiple entries, per period of 180 days (six months) on presentation at the airport of a return ticket and current valid passport with a validity of at least 6 months. When entering the Schengen territory, the 90 days will take effect from the date of entering the first Schengen country.
If you are visiting other countries of the European Union not listed here, please prior to departure check with the Embassy or Consulate if you need visa to enter the country.
For visits involving remunerated activity, whatever their duration, Australian and New Zealand citizens must obtain visas prior to entry.
