Situation of access to Spain for travelers from Canada

May 24, 2022

On Saturday, May 21st, 2022, a profound change in the regime of entry permits to Spain and the health control of said accesses has been published in the BOE. Section k) of article 1.1 of Order INT/452/2022 (which modifies Order INT/657/2020) allows the entry into Spain of

Persons with a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or a recovery certificate or a negative diagnosis certificate for said disease, which the Ministry of Health recognizes for these purposes, after verification by the health authorities. And for people under 12 years of age.

Therefore, from May 21st, 2022, all foreigners who are in possession of one of the three following certificates will be able to enter Spain, regardless of the reason for their trip:

  • Vaccination certificate: Certificates issued by the competent authorities of the country of origin from 14 days after the date of administration of the last dose of the complete vaccination schedule will be accepted, as long as no more than 270 days have elapsed from the date of administration of the last dose of said regimen. The vaccination certificate with a complete schedule for those under 18 years of age does not have an expiration date.

  • Diagnostic certificate: Those with a negative result will be accepted, whose sample collection has been obtained within 72 hours prior to departure to Spain in the case of nucleic acid amplification tests (eg PCR, TMA, LAMP, NEAR, etc.) or within 24 hours prior to departure to Spain in the case of rapid antigen tests (RAT).

  • Recovery certificate: Recovery certificates issued by the competent authority or by a medical service at least 11 days after the first NAAT diagnostic test or rapid antigen detection test with a positive result will be accepted as valid. The certificate will be valid for 180 days after the date of the first positive result.

Any of the three previous certificates allows entry into Spain, so if you have, for example, a PCR certificate (72 hours) or antigens (24 hours), it is no longer necessary to be vaccinated.

Children under 12 years of age may enter Spain without the need to present any certificate.

In addition to any of the aforementioned certificates, those travelers who do not have a European Union Digital COVID Certificate or equivalent must complete a health control form before the start of their trip through the website  www.spth.gob.esIt opens in new window  or from the Spain Travel Health application.
