José Manuel Albares calls for China to strive to bring the war in Ukraine to an end

March 14, 2022

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, spoke by phone today with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, to exert China’s influence over Russia to bring an end to its war against Ukraine.

During their phone call, José Manuel Albares stated to his counterpart that “we are at an historical moment that requires all world leaders to invoke a sense of responsibility and vision of the future”.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs also acknowledged that sanctions are not easy for anyone but that we are fully committed and prepared to assume their consequences.

The phone call also served to reiterate Spain’s condemnation, in the strongest terms, of the Russian attack on Ukraine. “Russia has undermined the foundations of peace and stability in Europe, as it threatens the international community as a whole” warned José Manuel Albares, and subsequently recalled that “Spain is fully committed to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”.
