About the OECD

Introduction

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is an International Organisation of intergovernmental nature composed of 37 member states. The OECD, headquartered in Paris, was created in 1960 with the objective to give continuity and consolidate the progress already achieved by the former Organisation for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC), constituted with the endeavour to undertake the implementation of the Marshal Plan. The OECD came into being to supersede the OEEC in the task of propelling the reconstruction and development in the European continent after the Second World War.
For more than 50 years, the OECD has acted as a framework for the Governments of democratic States with a market economy, to join forces and work together on facing better the economic, social and governance challenges so as to leverage opportunities more efficiently and coordinate policies at a local and international level.
The aims that were established at the time of its creation still prevail today (Article 1 of the Convention of the OECD in 1960):
 (a) to achieve the highest sustainable economic growth and employment and a rising standard of living in Member countries, while maintaining financial stability, and thus to contribute to the development of the world economy;
(b) to contribute to sound economic expansion in Member as well as non-member countries in the process of economic development; and
(c) to contribute to the expansion of world trade on a multilateral, non-discriminatory basis in accordance with international obligations.

The work of the OECD, hence, focuses on analysing the Economic and Social Development together with the numerous sectoral policies that influence it. For this reason, the scope of activities that the OECD encompasses are not only the study and monitoring of the economic situation and economic policies that are applied in the different countries, but also of a greater set of issues such as development aid, commerce, industrial services and activities, the economy of health, the environment, education and social affairs.
From a practical point of view, the work conducted by the OECD is materialized in studies and recommendations targeted for the Public Administration and the Governments of both member states and non-member States that have an interest in the task and the mission of this institution.
