What to Do in an Emergency
If, despite all this, you are affected by an emergency situation abroad, both the network of Embassies and Consulates, and the Directorate-General for Spaniards Abroad and Consular and Migration Affairs, can help you in case of need.

Before contacting the Embassy or Consulate, you should check what can and cannot be done by an Embassy or Consulate for you.

One of the most common setbacks abroad is the loss or theft of documentation. In this case, the Embassy and/or Consulate can issue, in office hours, a travel document for a limited time. Should you require more information, consult the section entitled Passport and other documentation.

If you are arrested, you are entitled to ask the local authorities to immediately get in touch with the Spanish Consul. Embassies can provide detainees with assistance: they can inform of the arrest should the detainee so wish, visit periodically, take and receive messages and correspondence. Should you require more information, you can consult the section entitled Consular assistance.

In the event of a serious medical emergency or accident abroad, you can contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate. We will be able to help you contact your family and your medical insurance company.

In the event of the death of a family or loved one abroad, consult the section entitled Other consular services.

If you are affected by a natural disaster, terrorist attack or political crisis, you should contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate or the Consular Emergency Unit.

The Consular Emergency Unit attends emergency and enquiries on +34 913948900 during the 24 hours.

Embassies and Consulates have an emergency phone line that may only be used in genuine cases of emergency. The use of this phone line is essentially designed for those cases that cannot be attended to within the ordinary work hours of the Consulate and that are of an exceptional nature.
