Mr García-Margallo Travels to Iran

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García-Margallo, will travel to Iran on Saturday 1 March, where he has an extensive agenda of meetings.

This trip, the first by a Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister to Iran since Ana Palacio visited Tehran in 2004, aims to jointly explore the possibilities that have arisen in the area of bilateral relations, following the conclusion of the Geneva Plan of Action on 24 November, which was welcomed by Spain.

The trip by the minister follows the meeting between the Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, and President Rohani within the framework of the ministerial week of the General Assembly of the United Nations in September 2013, and other recent high-level encounters, including the visit to Spain by a vice president of the Iranian government, Mohamed Ali Nayafi, during the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in January this year.

The minister will first travel to Isfahán, where he plans to meet with the provincial governor, the mayor and possibly other local authorities.

On Monday 3 March, the planned agenda includes meetings with the President of Iran, Hassan Rohani; the Chairman of Parliament, Ali Larijani; the Chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani; and the Foreign Minister, Mohamed Sarif.

In each case, Mr García-Margallo will have the opportunity to discuss various aspects of bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.

On Tuesday, 4 March, before making his return to Spain, the minister is scheduled to meet with the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, from whom he will hear first-hand about the Iranian perception of the state of negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme.

Mr García-Margallo hopes that his trip to Iran will help send an international message of confidence in the new positive dynamic that seems to have inspired the government of Iran into political action, especially with regards to providing adequate guarantees to the international community about the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme.
