José Manuel Albares discusses common European agenda with Hungarian counterpart

The Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, met on Thursday, 7 October, with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó, to discuss bilateral affairs, the European agenda and other international affairs, as well as the importance of the rule of law in Europe.

Between 2023 and 2024, Spain, Hungary and Belgium will take on the half-yearly rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union. For each six-month period, the corresponding State presides over the sessions held at all levels of the Council, helping to guarantee continuity for the work done by the EU at the institution.

“It is very important to coordinate closely at all levels for both preparing a programme for the trio and during the implementation of that programme to ensure success”, he added, after announcing that Spain is starting to define its priorities and wants the social agenda to “play a major role” alongside such issues as the Southern Neighbourhood and relations with Latin America.

The two ministers spoke about the upcoming conference on the Future of Europe. In this regard, José Manuel Albares highlighted the importance of discussing such issues as the development of European citizenship, boosting participation by cities in the EU and paying attention to the inequalities faced by certain territories - owing to their island nature or depopulation – together with sport in the construction of Europe.

During the meeting, the Spanish minister underlined Spain’s interest in strengthening bilateral economic relations, especially in the field of infrastructures - railways in particular - engineering and renewable energies, where Spain is home to cutting-edge and competitive companies.

The two ministers also spoke about migration issues, EU-UK relations, EU expansion, Ibero-America and the situation in Afghanistan.
