José Manuel Albares describes companies as “fundamental players” in Spanish foreign action

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, today described Spanish companies as “fundamental players” in Spanish foreign action and expressed his interest in them “driving the recovery”.

27/09/2021

The minister, at a meeting with some 20 representatives of leading Spanish companies, and of business organisations that represent most of the sectors of Spain’s business fabric, sought to acknowledge the importance he will give to Spanish businesses in boosting Spain’s foreign policy.

“Your contribution, as companies with a sound international presence, is fundamental as a driver of innovation and job creation”, highlighted the minister, who subsequently added that “you are a reflection of the values of our society: a commitment to sustainability, technological innovation, excellence and leadership”.

José Manuel Albares acknowledged that Spanish economic diplomacy and economic interests will be one of his priorities, in which he framed the decision to place the Directorate-General for Economic Diplomacy under his direct jurisdiction, through which he wishes to show his commitment on this matter.

The minister also said that the recovery is proving possible thanks to two factors: the vaccination rollout, with more than 75% of the population now having received the complete dose; and the Recovery and Resilience Plan – the most important boost in our history through public investment, which will stand at around 4% of GDP, through which “we not only want to recover but also to renew our economy”, he added.

To this end, José Manuel Albares placed economic diplomacy at the disposition of the business representatives “as one more instrument in the service of economic growth and prosperity in Spain”, while also stating to them that “we are relying on your to ensure that the recovery is fair and leaves no-one behind”.

José Manuel Albares, in his speech addressed to some 20 business representatives from different sectors, reviewed the global challenges facing Spanish companies which he undertook to provide a response to. “I want to work on solving the problems you face and on supporting you in the needs you detect”, he added.
